Your next trip to the gynecologist doesn’t have to be cringe worthy.
For many women, a trip to the gynecologist isn’t exactly the first thing they want to do. The whole situation can be uncomfortable, and for some women, it’s enough to keep them away from their OB/GYN’s office for much longer than is recommended. Don’t skip your women’s wellness appointment because of discomfort! Instead, follow these tips to make your next trip to the gynecologist as easy as possible.
#1. Find the right doctor.
In a perfect world, every gynecologist would be the most patient, understanding individual on the planet, but we don’t live in a perfect world, and all gynecologists are not made equal. It’s okay to shop around when it comes to picking a gynecologist. It’s of the utmost importance that you are comfortable enough to ask your doctor questions and share what’s going on with your health, so don’t be afraid to keep looking if you don’t feel that kind of comfort with your own doctor.
#2. Don’t worry about being overly clean.
Many women are embarrassed of how they look or smell, but the gynecologist’s office is the place where you can feel free to let those concerns go. Taking a shower ahead of time is all you really need to do. In fact, if you try to make yourself more “palatable” down there by douching, you could end up negatively affecting the tests you’ll be taking. Don’t worry, your doctor has seen it all before, and they won’t judge you on how well-groomed you are.
#3. Write down your questions ahead of time.
If you think of questions that you want to ask your gynecologist before your appointment, make sure you write them down. Many women tend to forget what questions they wanted to ask their doctors during their appointments, and then they end up leaving without getting their questions answered.
#4. Be upfront.
If you stay buttoned up and you never share your concerns with your gynecologist, then frankly, the only person you are doing a disservice to is yourself. It’s much more difficult for your doctor to make an accurate diagnosis if they don’t know everything that’s going on, so it’s essential that you are completely open and honest with your gynecologist. And, don’t be embarrassed to ask about funky odors, your sex-life or any other topics that may seem “taboo” in polite conversation. Answering those questions is what they are there for!
Many women dread going to the gynecologist, but it doesn’t have to be an uncomfortable experience, and these are just a few of the many things you can do to make your next appointment easier.
