Did you know that having sex is actually beneficial for your health?
Regular sex can do everything from help you find relief from your stress to improving your self-esteem. Most people are fully aware of the fact that sex feels good and is a healthy part of a relationship, but what many people don’t realize is that sex is actually beneficial for your health! The following is a list from our Sarasota obstetrics and gynecology clinic of the health benefits of having regular sex:
#1. It can strengthen your immune system.
People who have sex more often tend to have stronger immune systems. That’s because people who have frequent sex have higher levels of immunoglobulins than people who have sex less often, and immunoglobulins are your body’s first line of defense against illness.
#2. It can help you cope with stress.
When you have sex, your brain releases the feel-good hormones, oxytocin and endorphins. Not only do these hormones create feelings of intimacy between you and your partner, they also help to stave off depression, anxiety and stress. That may be why one study from the University of West Scotland found that people who have sex at least once every two weeks coped with stress more effectively than those who didn’t.
#3. It can help you sleep better.
Many people refer to an orgasm as “nature’s Ambien,” and part of the reason for this is that endorphins help to relax the mind and the body, which prepares you to go to sleep. Prolactin, which is a hormone released during orgasm, is also found in higher levels during sleep, suggesting a link between the two.
#4. It can keep your heart healthy.
When it comes to your heart, sex has many benefits. Regular sex helps to balance your testosterone and estrogen levels, which is important for heart health. If either hormone is too low, it can put you at a higher risk for heart disease. Sex also helps to lower blood pressure, which helps to lower your risk for heart disease.
#5. It’s a form of exercise.
Exercise is an important part of a healthy lifestyle, but not all exercise has to be done at the gym! Believe it or not, sex is a form of exercise, and it can burn calories, strengthen your muscles, get your heart rate up and improve your flexibility. Sex can burn up to three calories per minute for women and four calories per minute for men.
#6. It can make your periods lighter and ease cramps.
Want to get rid of your cramps or make your period lighter? Try having sex! When you orgasm, your uterus contracts. These contractions, in addition to the normal contractions associated with menstruation, help to expel the uterine lining more quickly. Those contractions also help to get rid of the compounds that lead to cramps.
As you can see, regular sex isn’t just important for maintaining intimacy or improving your self-esteem, it comes with many health benefits. If you have questions or concerns about how sex affects your health, please contact us!
