On one side, you will hear that you should religiously take your prenatal vitamins, even before you get pregnant, while the other side will tell you that you can get all of the nutrients that you need through your diet. Even if you eat a perfect diet, which is incredibly difficult to do, it is likely that there will still be quite a few gaps in your nutrition that your developing baby relies on. For instance, folic acid helps to prevent birth defects in the neural tube that affect the spinal cord and brain! The neural tube starts to develop early on in pregnancy, within the first 28 days! Even though foods, like fortified cereal, veggies, nuts and beans, contain folic acid, it is still a good idea to have take prenatal vitamins as a backup plan. Other vitamins, like calcium, iodine and iron are also incredibly important during pregnancy.

Even with all of the debate out there, we believe that it is still a good idea to take your prenatal vitamins. Sticking to a perfect diet is hard, and it is all too easy to slip up and not eat enough of something.
