If you’ve read our last blog, then you already know that there are many things that could hurt your chances of getting pregnant. We talked about how weight, caffeine and sleep can all play a part in your ability to conceive. The following is a list from our obstetrics clinic in Sarasota of a few more possible reasons why you aren’t getting pregnant:
- Stress – There’s no doubt about it, when you are having trouble getting pregnant, it can be stressful and, unfortunately, stress can hurt your chances of getting pregnant even more. Stress can affect how your hypothalamus functions and your hypothalamus regulates the hormones that cause ovulation. If you are overly stressed, it could cause you to ovulate later than usual or sometimes not at all.
- Smoking – Smoking can affect fertility rates of both males and females. Studies have shown that smoking can cause several fertility problems, including damage to the eggs, cervical changes and problems with the fallopian tubes. According to The American Society for Reproductive Medicine, approximately thirteen percent of infertility cases are caused by the use of tobacco.
- Water-based lubricant – Water based lubricants can actually hinder sperm movement by anywhere from sixty to one hundred percent!
- Excessive alcohol consumption – Drinking any amount of alcohol can affect your ability to conceive, but heavy alcohol consumption increases your risk of ovulation disorders.
If you’ve adjusted your lifestyle, and you’ve been trying to get pregnant for over a year without success, then it is time to consult our OBGYN. We can determine if you have a fertility issue, and what can be done about it.
